A discussion on a joint preparation program within the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat Division to face the Southwest Monsoon was held on 11.05.2026 under the chairmanship of the Deputy Minister of Urban Development, Mr. Eranga Gunasekara, at the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat Auditorium.

The occasion was attended by Kolonnawa Divisional Secretary, Mr. Priyanath Perera, Assistant Divisional Secretary, Mrs. Dineshi Chandraratne, Chairman of the Kolonnawa Urban Council, Mr. Dhammika Wijemuni, Acting Chairman of the Kotikawatta - Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha, Mr. Chandrasiri Paranavithana, Major M. C. of the Kelanimulla Army Camp. Mr. Prasad, District Disaster Management Officers, Grama Niladharis in charge of all divisions, Sri Lanka Police and a large number of government officials and representatives of the Kolonnawa Disaster Committee participated.

According to a forecast received with the activation of the southwest monsoon in the country, a pre-preparedness program and a post-relief security program were initiated to identify the disaster risk and to prepare for future flood situations and to ensure the safety and welfare of the general public with the aim of minimizing flood disasters for the people of the Kolonnawa area of ​​the Colombo District. The discussions were held on the measures to be taken to prepare for future flood situations and to ensure the safety and welfare of the general public.

For this task, a joint program is to be launched by bringing together Divisional Secretariat Officers, Grama Niladharis, District Disaster Management Coordination Unit, regional level government institutions, Disaster Relief Service Officers, and government officials into a single mechanism. This community safety program is being implemented jointly by the tri-services and the police to maintain boat services, security centers, public health centers, and to streamline the provision of humanitarian assistance, including food distribution, for emergency rescue operations.
